Tangier has dozens of mosques, including the Grand Mosque in the medina, and the call to prayer carries across the city. No planning is needed: neighbourhood mosques, prayer rooms in the stations, the port and Ibn Battouta airport. The only useful preparation is checking the timings, which shift quickly with the season.

In Tangier the halal question does not arise: Morocco is an overwhelmingly Muslim country, pork is absent from the ordinary food chain, and the meat sold and served is suitable — with no logo, because none is needed. So do not look for a label. The city, a former international zone, keeps a few bars and restaurants serving alcohol, mostly around the port and in the districts inherited from that era: that is the only thing to watch. The fish is excellent, as its position on the strait would suggest.
