Koutoubia Mosque β the symbol of the city
Its 77-meter minaret has watched over Marrakesh since the 12th century. Prayer inside is for Muslims; the gardens around it are lovely at sunset, when the call to prayer rises over Jemaa el-Fna.
Ben Youssef Madrasa
One of the most beautiful Quranic schools in the Muslim world: carved cedar, zellige tilework and serene courtyards. A masterpiece of Islamic architecture, recently restored.
The souks
Leather, lanterns, spices, carpets: the labyrinth north of Jemaa el-Fna is an experience in itself. Negotiate with a smile, and stop for a fresh orange juice on the square.
