Is E471 halal?

E471 is one of the most common emulsifiers — in sliced bread, biscuits, ice cream, margarine and pastries. It is made from fats that can be vegetable (palm, soy, sunflower) or animal.

Plant-based E471 is halal. Animal-derived E471 may come from pork or from cattle not slaughtered Islamically, making it problematic — and regulations do not require the origin to be stated on the packaging.

In practice: if the label says “vegetable origin” or the product carries a halal logo, you are fine. Otherwise, contact the brand (most reply quickly on social media) or choose a certified alternative.
