Your flight falls over prayer time and you are not sure how to pray on a plane? Here is how to do it, calmly and discreetly.
The essentials in 30 seconds
If you can pray on the ground before or after the flight within the prayer's time window, that is best. Otherwise, pray in your seat, sitting, bowing your head slightly for ruku and a little more for sujud. As a traveler, you may shorten and combine your prayers.
1. The best option: pray on the ground
Pray at the airport before takeoff, or on arrival before the prayer time ends. Our "where to pray at the airport" guides show you the rooms. Combine dhuhr/asr or maghrib/isha for a long flight.
2. Doing wudu
Do your wudu at the airport before boarding. On board, the lavatory allows the minimum. If genuinely impossible, tayammum (dry ablution) is a recognised option.
3. Praying seated at your place
Pray sitting, facing the qibla at the start if possible (our qibla tool or the crew can help), then continue even if the plane changes course. Movements are slight head bows (a little for ruku, more for sujud).
4. Standing, if space allows
On some flights, a free area may allow praying standing if the crew permits and outside turbulence / seatbelt times. Stay discreet; flight safety comes first.
The traveler's facilities
Shortening 4-rakat prayers to 2 (dhuhr, asr, isha) and combining dhuhr/asr, maghrib/isha solves most situations.
Frequently asked questions
