Travelling via Brussels-Zaventem and wondering where to pray? Of our whole series, this is the best-equipped airport — and for once, it is the traveller in a hurry who is best served. Here is why, and how to plan around it.
The essentials in 30 seconds
Zaventem has several prayer rooms, including a dedicated Muslim room, in the A and B gate areas. They are after security and open 24/7. Access is free, but you need a boarding pass — so you must already be airside.
The opposite of Lyon, and that is good news
At Lyon the room is landside: once through security it is out of reach. At Brussels it is exactly the reverse. The rooms are in the departure zone, so:
· if you have already cleared security, you are in the right place — the most common and the most time-pressed case;
· if you are still landside, you cannot get there: clear security first, then pray at your ease.
Above all, being open 24/7 solves the number one airport problem: at Orly the room closes around 22:00, which puts Fajr and Isha out of reach for much of the year. Not here. For a night flight or a first flight of the morning, Zaventem is the easiest airport in the series.
Where they are
B gates area: above the shops, at the far end of the hall.
A gates area: at the top of the stairs, near the Crystal Media Shop, opposite gate A42, at lounge level.
Follow the “prayer rooms” signs — that is the wording used on site, and it works in all three languages of the airport. The pictogram is on the overhead panels next to the toilets: look up rather than hunting for a door.
What we know, and where it comes from
These locations come from the airport's public information. We have not verified them ourselves on site, and airports get rebuilt. Zaventem publishes a contact address dedicated to the prayer rooms: prayerrooms@brusselsairport.be. That is rare, and it is the best way to get an up-to-date answer before you travel.
What we will not claim: that there is a dedicated wudu area. We have no trace of one, so we do not write it.
Wudu
In the toilets, then, until proven otherwise. Two habits change everything against high basins and sensor taps: filling a small squeezable bottle before going into the cubicle, and keeping a microfibre towel in your cabin bag. The full method is in our guide: making wudu while travelling.
If you have no time to get there
Zaventem is large, and a room at the far end of the terminal is unreachable when boarding is close. Two markers:
· Boarding closes around 20 minutes before departure. That is your real deadline, not the time on the board.
· A quiet corner near your gate is enough. Pier ends and gates for later departures empty out between flights. A pocket mat and two minutes.
A pocket prayer mat is no problem at security: it is an ordinary item. Pack it along the side of your bag.
What we do not rule on
