You take off from London at 10pm, you land in Dubai at 6.30am, and during the flight the sun rises at 3am through the window. Which time do you follow? It is one of the most asked questions by Muslim travellers, and it mixes two very different things: what can be measured, and what jurisprudence says. Here is the first part, honestly separated from the second.
The short version
What matters is not the time on your watch: it is where you are at the moment you pray. In flight, that place is constantly changing. The practical method: check your real position on the flight screen, work out the times for that point, and pray when the window is open there. One simple principle: the sun you can see through the window is your best clock.
1. Prepare before take-off
The most effective thing happens on the ground, with a signal. Before boarding:
โ Note the prayer times for your departure city and your arrival city for the day of the flight (our prayer times give them for any city).
โ Note take-off and landing times in the local time of each city.
โ Check whether a prayer falls during the flight. Often the answer is "only one" โ and everything becomes much simpler.
Keep the page in your notebook: it stays readable in flight mode.
2. In flight, the seat-back screen is your tool
The flight tracking screen gives your position, the local time of the ground below, and often sunrise and sunset at the destination. It is the most useful information on the flight, and nobody looks at it.
Without a screen, your phone's offline map in flight mode still works: GPS does not need a signal. Your position appears, and both our qibla compass and our prayer times can read it.
3. The sun through the window does not lie
On an eastbound flight, night sometimes lasts three hours. On a westbound flight, sunset can last six. What you see is the astronomical reality of where you are: if the sun sets through the window, maghrib begins at that spot. Many travellers rely on it, cross-checked with the flight screen.
The trap: polar routes (Europe to East Asia, North America to the Gulf). At very high latitudes the solar markers become unusable โ sometimes there is no night at all. That is precisely where the question becomes religious rather than practical.
4. On arrival, reset to local time
As soon as you land, everything is normal again: you are somewhere, and that somewhere has times. The only real trap is your body's lag for two or three days โ fajr feels absurdly early and isha absurdly late.
What helps: switch on prayer notifications for your new city as soon as you arrive, and do not use your sense of tiredness to estimate the time.
5. What works with no signal
In flight and abroad without a data plan, three things always work: GPS (independent of the network), a page saved in your notebook, and a screenshot of the times taken before departure. It is basic, and it is what saves you.
