You board the plane, the trolley arrives, and you discover that today's dish is pork. This can be prepared for — but not at boarding time. Here is how the Muslim meal on a plane really works.
The short version
The Muslim meal has an international code: MOML (Moslem Meal). It is ordered at least 24 to 48 hours before the flight, never on board. It is prepared by a caterer, and the level of guarantee depends entirely on the airline — hence the next question: does "MOML" mean "certified halal"? Not always.
How to order it
Three ways, in order of reliability:
1. When you book. This is the safest. On most airline websites, a "special meals" section appears just after seat selection.
2. In "manage my booking". Log in with your reference, look for "special meal", and select MOML.
3. By phone to customer service, giving your reference. Useful when the ticket was bought through an agency or a comparison site — in that case the special meal is almost never passed on automatically.
The rule: 48 hours before departure, it is closed. After that, most airlines refuse, because the trays are already loaded.
One important point: check the day before
Special meals get lost. Aircraft change, a connection operated by another airline, a modified ticket: at each step the request can vanish. What regulars do: reopen your booking the day before departure and check that MOML is still there. Thirty seconds that save six hours of flying on an empty stomach.
On a journey with a connection operated by two different airlines, the request often has to be made for each segment.
Does MOML mean "certified halal"?
Honestly: it depends on the airline, and we cannot guarantee it on your behalf. What can be said and checked:
— Airlines from Muslim countries generally serve a standard halal meal on all flights, with no special request needed.
— European and Asian airlines offer MOML as one special meal among about thirty (vegetarian, kosher, gluten-free and so on). The caterer is sometimes certified, sometimes simply "no pork, no alcohol".
— "Pork-free" and "halal" are not the same thing: a chicken dish not slaughtered according to the rite falls into the first category and not the second.
The only way to know: ask the airline, and look at the packaging on board — certified trays generally carry the certifying body's logo and are sealed. That is a useful sign, not absolute proof.
If you forgot to order it
This happens all the time, and it can be handled:
— Ask the crew at boarding, not at service time. There is sometimes an unclaimed special tray.
— Fall back on vegetarian. Ask whether a VGML or VLML tray is left: it is the simplest and safest solution.
— Eat before. A proper meal at the airport settles the question for a six-hour flight.
— Bring enough to last. Sandwich, dates, dried fruit, bars: all of it passes security (only liquids are limited to 100 ml).
On board, what you can eat safely
On a standard tray, what generally stays available: bread, salad without meat dressing, raw vegetables, cheese (if rennet is not a question for you), fruit, plain yoghurt, crackers and chocolate. Avoid industrial desserts (gelatine) and sauces.
And of course you do not drink the alcohol on offer — "orange juice, please" is enough, nobody notices.
